After living in the puget sound region for over 4 years, I decided that now that I live within walking distance of the Puyallup Fair, I have no more excuses. So, on Saturday afternoon, my wife and I walked the quick 15 minutes down the hill and checked it out. Sorry, but I forgot my camera, so I'll try and keep the narrative brief.
We went there just for the evening. The weather was perfect - partly cloudy; about 55 or 60 degrees. First we hit up the rides - no Dizzy Pass at the Spring Fair, so we just had to buy tickets. We only did three rides. Monster Mouse was first, and that ride was hilarious! I love the "Matterhorn style" cars that you can barely fit in, and the rickety look/feel of the ride. Plus, the second chain randomly thrown into the middle to get you through the straightaway was just awesome. Then we did the "Haunted Mansion" dark ride. Although it looked promising, I was disappointed. I expected to be laughing a lot harder at the end of it, but it was just the same thing over and over. And you could barely even seen any of the monsters, so I didn't get to see any of the bad props! Though I'll admit I did jump once.
Then, we did Coaster Thrill Ride. I'd heard nothing but good things about this coaster, so I expected a lot. And boy did it ever live up to expectations. What a GREAT roller coaster!! Fast, exciting, tons of airtime, decent length, not too rough. This is easily, without a doubt the best coaster in Washington State. I'd even say it is a pretty darn close competitor for best coaster in the entire Northwest region. Easily made my top 20 list, and I can see why it is an ACE classic. I am just so sad that the ride is only open three weeks a year...
The other two coasters were not open, Extreme Scream is still a rip off (though $10 per person isn't too bad from what I hear it used to be), and neither of us were interested in riding any of the flats. So, we grabbed a burger, fries, and funnel cake, walked around and looked at all the exhibits and animals that we could in the remaining hour or two we had. Headed outside around 9pm to watch the fireworks show (which was pretty good!), and then walked back up the hill to our place.
All in all, I was very impressed with the fair. I can tell that there is a lot to do there, and I look forward to going back in the fall, if nothing else but to ride the coaster a few more times! I just can't get over how good it was - it just doesn't look that promising, but I don't think you could make a standard double out-and-back wooden coaster any more perfect than that!
