What would everyone think of a dark ride at silverwood? Say something like a haunted mansion or pirates type attraction. What about something like Indiana Jones??? Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

Personally, I love water-based rides. So for me, a "Pirates"-style ride would be my choice.
HOWEVER...you just don't see many parks outside of the world of Disney that can afford/choose to build something like this. I'm sure a lot of it has to do with money, and a lot has to do with the fact that dark rides take a TON of maintenance to keep the show working properly. I just could never see a park Silverwood's size putting in a Pirates-style ride.
More than likely they would put in some type of interactive trackless dark ride since these are far less expensive and I would suspect more manageable. It's just a matter of coming up with a solid theme that fits the park.

There are some cheaper darkrides that lie somewhere between the terribly cheap looking scenery of your standard target ride and the detailed enviornments of Pirates. I hear one of the biggest issues is repeatability though. Not only are darkrides hard to maintain I think part of their issues are when people grow tired with them and start to tear them apart. Interactive rides seem to hold their lines for far longer in non Disney parks. I gotta laugh at Indy level though, I mean it'd be great but do you have any idea just how expensive that whole system was? Now going off how impressive Scarywood was, we might see something decent but who knows. I think that Silverwood should either do a larger log ride with a few story elements included OR perhaps rebuild the Phantom Theater from Kings Island (that ride even has a bit of a following it seems). www.youtube.com/watch?v=iARdKCqpyAU this video has it if you watch forward to about 9min in. I also believe this is the company that designed it www.randrdesign.com/frame_2.html. And really either way you cut it I'd like either a spookhouse something west themed or something that justifies the presence of Garfield in the park (granted Garfield is a little boring and hard for me to build a ride around).

When it comes to attractions, dark rides are always tricky things. As it's been mentioned before, maintence and money are two main issues...especially money.
A good dark ride can easily cost more then a major roller coaster, and for many it's a "You get what you pay for situation." Case in point, for most parks that do have a interactive dark ride, it's Ghost Blasters from Sally. Fun ride, though the sheer majority of things is 2D sets and cutouts in blacklight.
Compare that to another Sally darkride, Challenge of Tutankhamon...it's a lot more pricey then Ghost Blasters, but it has multiple endings, fire, detailed sets, animatronics and a trackless ride system.
For me I'd say SW is getting a interactive dark ride, mainly since that's really the only thing mentioned in the rumor mill regaurding a dark ride of some sort. No idea if it's a trackless or not.
As for any other kind of dark ride, I know I can easily rule out anything like Indiana Jones or Spiderman...especially since Spiderman was over $100 Million. IJ was very pricey as well, and I only know one other park that uses the same kind of ride system.
I'd say there is some chance for a boat ride, omnimover or Madhouse. Though any of them will need good sets, effects, soundtrack (This is crucial for a great Madhouse.) etc.

I don't think any major dark ride attraction will ever be built under this current ownership. The dark ride attractions that have been talked about cost millions of dollars to build and I don't think Gary could or would invest in something like that. I think Gary will continue to do his best to improve Scarywood which I think he believes will fill the void of the absence of any dark ride attraction. I wouldn't be surprised if they do some type of walkthrough with the Ice Palace as all the construction for Blood Bayou was permanent.

wow blood bayou is permanent? Cool to know I can look forward to it every halloween. I dunno that running it year round would be wise what could they do with it as a non halloween walkthrough?
It is too bad they can't build like a Garfield themed varient of Mr Toad with wacky whimsicalness but yeah.
I do feel that for Halloween Blood Bayou definitely fills the gap, I absolutely loved that experience.
so even Sally Corp stuff is too expensive at this juncture?
youknow what I'd REALLY like to see might just be increased theming in general around the park.

I will say, there is enough talent in the area to put together an attraction that would rival many of the upper end attractions elsewhere. Obviously no one thinks an Indiana Jones type attraction with single animatronic figures costing 6 figures is within reach. I will say, trackless ride systems incorporating motion platforms on the ride vehicle are not as unique, expensive or exclusive as they once were. I think there will definately be some kind of dark attraction added to the park within the next few years. I know for a fact that in the mid 90's there were plans being developed for a dark attraction (I am not at liberty to disclose specifics) and those plans have just been waiting for the right mix of talent and the required attendance numbers. Both those those conditions have now been met so I think we will be seeing/hearing more about it moving forward.
Just my 2 cents

That sounds promising. It would be neat to see Silverwood take that big step. I'm excited to watch Silverwood get the attention it deserves. A dark ride would definitely put it in the lime light. Thanks for the info.

jsbishop, if you are speaking truth, then I'm very happy to know that Silverwood is at least thinking about a dark ride. To this point, all I ever heard was pure speculation.
Whatever gets done, let's hope they do it right, and take care of it through the years. I've been on far too many dark rides that started out very well, but over the years turned into a shell of their former selves. At that point all that you end up with is a joke of an attraction that people make fun of more than anything else.
I personally really enjoyed the "Gobblers Getaway" at Holiday World. Yes, it's geared toward young children, but it was fun, re-rideable, and nicely themed. At it didn't rely on some trendy character or movie that no one will care about in a few years. I could see that ride having a decent shelf life.

I think any kind of dark ride would be good, and I agree that pretty much all of the ones that are in the poll for this thread are way too expensive to ever see at Silverwood. But of the ones up there, I too love Pirates, Haunted Mansion, Indy, or Space Mountain type attractions. I am not a fan of motion simulators. Sure, they can be sort of cool, and they don't make me sick, but I just have never really thought they were all that great. I'd much prefer a coaster or something like Pirates to a motion simulator any day.
I don't think an interactive dark ride would be too far a stretch, and certainly not too expensive for the park. Heck, Enchanted Forest has an interactive dark ride, and I would certainly think Silverwood has more money to work with than they did.
Glad to hear that Blood Bayou is permenant, but I hope it doesn't end up being exactly the same every year. It was an awesome haunt, but if nothing ever changes, it could get old really fast. Terror Canyon Trail was awesome the first year, but really lame the second year for me, and I think a lot of that had to do with the fact that I'd been through it before.
Anyways...looking forward to more details if/when SW does decide to move forward with this!
