Hello once again everybody, with Halloween in season I'm pretty much hitting up all the Haunts that I can. Last week I hit up Wild Waves Fright Fest which thankfully was better then last year.
This weekend I'll be hitting up a couple haunts I've never been to, and I just got back from one of them. Over in Snohomish there's Stocker Farms Field of Screams.
www.stockerfarms.com/fos-home.asp
Now attending this Haunt was very interesting considering I'll probably be working there next week, I auditioned for it and I'm on the alternate list. Since the weather was turning out better then expected, I made my way over since I've never been to it before...that and I can really see what spots I might be working in.
Now the location of FOS is pretty nice, it's right on Hwy 9 and is fairly easy to get to. The surrounding area is well lit, and there's three things one can do at night.
The farm has the haunted Field of Screams, a non-haunted corn maze that you can do at night. (Bring a glowstick or flashlight for that!) Also the place does have a food stand.
Now for prices and my short and simple review, scroll all the way down. Since I'll be giving plenty of spoilers as always in my big reviews.
SPOILERS AHEAD!
Now FOS has a backstory they run with, here's the story from last year.
The backstory for FOS is before the Stocker Family owned the farm, it was owned by the Slasher Family. Now the Slashers were poor, so much that the state bought the farm and had a traveling Circus/Sideshow move in to bring in money.
However the Slashers weren't too fond of that, and fueded with the circus folk. It all heated up till one night two of the Slasher brothers dressed up like clowns, snuck into the circus tent, set it on fire and locked all the enterances. For all of those that weren't burned alive, they drove the freaks into the cornfield. That event was called "The Carnival of Carnage."
This year, the backstory continues with what happened. The Mayor of Snohomish forced the farm to be flooded in hopes of washing away all the carnage and bad memories. However all the flooding did was uproot several nasty things that should of stayed hidden, and as with any horror/ ghost story...some things won't go away.
---
The whole set-up for FOS is pretty interesting, once you have your wristband you first enter a tent where you're given an audio spiel of the rules and a little bit about the story of the haunt with the flooding.
After you're given the rules, you then go outside and head into another tent. The enterance to the tent is pretty creepy since the walls have odd drawings and words like "Flood" and "KILL KILL KILL" scribbled on it.
Inside the tent is a pitch black maze you have to find your way through, I am seriously glad the people behind me had a glowstick since it was tricky to go through. So much that I walked right into a wall and found myself back at the enterance the first go-around. Oh yes, there's also a couple talent hidden inside to make things interesting.
Once I finally found myself out the other end, I found out that was just a little starter. For once you're out the maze, you enter a huge queue line that takes you to the enterance to the cornfield. (Though if you buy a VIP Pass, you'll enter a seperate line that'll take you directly to the enterance.)
The place certainly has a queue line that's ready to hold a HUGE line, though thankfully tonight wasn't too busy. So I just had to duck under all the ropes to reach the line at the very end. The place is also smart enough to have a port a potty right near the enterance.
Another nice feature is the line does have entertainment, since the crowds were small enough there was just one talent going through the people. It was pretty much a guy wearing a nurses outfit, stethoscope and the retro female mask from "The Strangers".
The guy was doing a really good job of creeping people out, he a had a good amount of people hiding behind their friends.
Once I was at the enterance of the field, they let me go through all by myself. Oh boy.
Now I wasn't by myself for long, since I did eventually catch up to a couple that was moving slower then me. Thankfully it was a guy and gal who we're here to have a good time, so it was pretty much just us going through the corn.
---
Before I get into the main details, I will first say that this haunt is LONG. It's pretty much a one acre attraction, so you'll be going on quite a journey.
Also, this haunt is able to have a natural creepiness to it. Walking through the corn at night, it's dark, the stalks are tall so you really can't see what's gonna happen next, you sometimes here muffled screams, sound effects or a chainsaw in the distance. All of this combined help make things very uneasy.
As for the whole journey, it's made up of outdoor sections and several indoor sections. There's a whole smorgasborgh of twisted sights.
You'll come across members of the Slasher family, from the demented Suzie Slasher who has her own playroom with a demented teddy bear, to the brothers who own a butcher shop with fresh victims and freaky hanging bodies.
You'll also encounter clowns, scarecrows, pumpkinheads, a dog named "Fluffy", swamp creatures etc.
A lot of the characters hide very well in the corn, so once the first scare happens...every pathway is a potential fright.
---
There's also a couple unique scenes and features that help the haunt stand out, in one section there's a barbed wire pathway that forces you to duck down. However the farther the path goes, the lower the clearence becomes so you have to crouch down pretty far to get out.
The Field also has one of my favorite elements in a haunt, a Vortex Tunnel. A Vortex Tunnel is a bridge that goes through a spinning barrel, as you walk through the bridge your mind is thrown off and it feels like the bridge you're walking on is turning.
Now I've been through several Vortex Tunnels, and unfortuntly some of them wern't too good since the odd feeling didn't happen.
Thankfully, that's not the case with the Vortex Tunnel here since the effect is pulled off perfectly the moment you step inside. I couldn't take several steps without having to grab onto the railing, it was seriously throwing my mind for a loop and throwing my balance off.
Another good room is Suzie's Slasher's playroom, before you enter the playroom you hear a custom made soundtrack to the tune of "One two, Freddy's coming for you.." (Naturally instead of Freddy, it's Suzie)
Once inside the playroom, you're greeted by walls of twisted dolls and stuffed animals, not to mention a crazy lighting that sends the room rapidly in various reds, blues, greens etc. Also in the room is a living teddy bear that has a nice surprise to scare with.
The second part of the playroom is where you meet Suzie, a hyperactive girl who always wants to play. The room is filled with tv's that are on static, and there's various bloody writing on the screens.
Suzie was bouncing around and asking if anyone can say "Choo-Choo", well I decided to say "Choo-Choo"...and I was greeted by a loud train horn going off right behind me, Suzie was laughing manically and said good-bye as me and the couple headed out.
The field also has a bridge with it's own little surprise (A air hammer going off to vibrate it), and it also has a scene that's downright putrid.
Talking with the guys that run it, this year they're having a new element to mess with the guests...smells. There's a section that has garbage bags hanging about, and they REEK SOMETHING FIERCE. Seriously, I'm glad the couple I was with walked quickly through that area since the smells are vile. It's just one of the things that help mess with the guests.
---
Finally, there's another special feature that really screws around with the people that go through. There's no warning when it happens, and it's so well camafloged you can't get any hint.
In various sections of the field, the pathway is rigged with sections that arn't solid ground. It's really tricky to explain as once you step down on a special section, you immediadly sink and kinda bounce on the ground. It's a incredibly wierd effect, and is always effective every time it happens! It's by far the "WTF?!" moment in the field.
Oh yes, there's also a section in the field where it splits up into a little maze and you have to find you're way through. This one being a lot easier then the pitch black maze at the start of the attraction.
As for the talent in the field, they were energetic and played their roles right. Some went for the straight up startle scares, while others intereacted with the groups and creeped them out. There was also plenty of talent in the field as well, so there wasn't really a feeling of dead space.
Finally, there is a chainsaw scare. This one being pretty effective since the you're still in a corn path and really can't run away till at the end.
END SPOILERS
Overall the attraction is very well done and long. While I didn't really time myself when I went through, expect to be here a while since it's a big haunt.
Was it worth the price? Well if I had to pay for admission, yeah I'd say it was well worth the price for what you get. (Since I auditioned for the haunt, I was given a coupon for free admission.)
The price for Field of Screams is $15.
The price for the non-haunted corn maze is $10.
If you want to do both, there's a combo deal where $20 will get you admission into FOS and the corn maze.
Also for $5 extra you can get a VIP Pass that will allow you to skip the main queue line for FOS after you go through the "special tent".
Finally, parking is FREE. Keep in mind it's a first come, first serve basis.
For dates, times and other info just follow the link I posted up in this post.
You'll also want to check the site if you attend, since they will post if the haunt is closed due to bad weather.
