...that would be Great America, not Great Adventure (I wish).
I took a recent business trip to the former home of Aftershock for the first time. What did I think? Well, read on...
It's a typical Six Flags park. And these days, that's getting to be less and less of a bad thing. I was there yesterday and crowds were big, but not insane.
On to the coasters: Raging Bull is now my #3 coaster of all time, behind Millenium Force and Superman: ROS. EXCELLENT coaster. And my first B&M Hyper. However, I found it to be really the only "must do" at this park. And make no mistake, it was deifinitely a "must do".
The rest of the coasters can either be found at other places, or, are good/great rides, but nothing that would probably make your top 10 list, IMO. Highlights for me personally included a couple of decent woodies (American Eagle and Viper), about the funnest Arrow loopscrew I've ever been on (Demon), a nice spinner (Rajun Cajun), and a few great rides that I've already been on at other parks (Batman, V2, and Superman Ultimate Flight). Also I can't forget the classic Schwartzkopf "Whizzer" - this guy just knew how to design a fun coaster.
Now on to the big new ride for 2008: The Dark Knight coaster. Yes, I was excited for this ride. Yes, I waited 90 mintues for it. And was I disappointed at the end of the day? Meh. I certainly wasn't expecting Disney-calliber theming; I was trying to keep my expectations in check. I had heard it was simply an enclosed mouse with so-so effects. And it was. I did find it strange that there was not one AA in the entire ride, but hey, it was still a fun trip. And I'm a bit partial to anything that is indoors and even attempts to be themed (Disaster Transport anyone?) Would I do it again? Sure. But not if the wait was more than 20 minutes. Overall I know there were a lot of disappointed people I talked to who were expecting some sort of mega-coaster. I'm not sure why...they saw the size of the building too.
Overall, I loved the collection of coasters with the exception of Iron Wolf. This is now the second B&M stand-up that has kicked the crap out of me (Mantis was first) and I'm hoping that they all don't age this poorly. (Riddler's Revenge has always been a favorite of mine after all...)
Finally, I must add that after having now been on two Superman Ultimate Flight B&M flyers that the "pretzel loop" is hands-down the single best inversion on any coaster I've ever been on. Nothing comes close. (Maybe someday I'll get down to MM and give Tatsu a whirl.)
121 coasters for me and counting...
